A 2009 documentary about the Akron Beacon Journal and it’s founding family has won very high accolades for public TV outlet Western Reserve PBS (WNEO/45 Alliance-WEAO/49 Akron).
Final Edition: Journalism according to Jack and Jim Knight, which tells the story of the Knight family, the Akron Beacon Journal and the rise and fall of the Knight-Ridder newspaper chain, won a top award in the 2010 Ohio Society of Professional Journalists competition. The hour-long documentary, which was a three-year project by University of Akron professors Paul Jacoway and Kathleen Endres, and narrated by Akron deputy mayor David Lieberth, won first place in the Best Documentary (Television-All Markets) category.
John (Jack) and Jim Knight were Akron brothers and prominent national figures who owned and ran the Beacon Journal newspaper in the 1900s. They eventually created the Knight-Ridder Newspapers Inc. empire of 31 daily and 26 nondaily newspapers in 28 U.S. markets. The brothers also founded the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, now based in Miami, Fla.
(Of course, Knight-Ridder was bought out by The McClatchy Company back in March of 2006, with the Beacon Journal spun off to Black Press, Ltd. later that August.)
Western Reserve PBS will air an encore presentation of “Final Edition” on their “Fusion” digital subchannel (WNEO 45.2/WEAO 49.2) Thursday, October 28, at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. and on Saturday, October 30, at 7 p.m.
