WNEO’s Early Change

Northeast Ohio has already seen one full-power analog TV station go dark months before the federally mandated digital transition, though the change has affected only a small part of the Cleveland/Akron (Canton) market. Mansfield local independent station WMFD/68 won approval to go digital-only due to various issues regarding the replacement of its analog facility/antenna. WMFD-DT (RF 12) no longer has an analog 68 sister. In what's no surprise to regular OMW readers, we're not long from the … [Read more...]

Like the various tree limbs, leaves and such still left behind in Ohio after the "remnants" of Hurricane Ike hit us on Sunday, this one's a bit cluttered, too. More on that storm and its effects in a bit...ON THE LIST AGAIN: A brief foray out of our electronic media world, to the print media world. We stumbled upon this item literally by accident, but it appears the latest round of cuts at the Akron Beacon Journal has put the job of sports columnist Patrick McManamon in the crosshairs - again. On … [Read more...]

No Particular Place To Go

Just some stuff to refresh the Mighty Blog for a Monday...and as it turns out, another sports-related theme has emerged, without us even trying...ONE QUESTION ANSWERED: It didn't take long for Youngstown TV Supergroup New Vision Television to name a replacement for veteran WYTV/33 sports director Bob Hannon, who left the station to head up the Youngstown branch of the United Way.He's the station's assistant sports director, Bill Castrovince, who's been in that role and doing the ABC affiliate's … [Read more...]

Fire Bumps Station

We'd already heard about the fire that broke out Saturday at Brimfield Township's Puritan Systems, a rubber recycling plant off Ohio 43 near Interstate 76 in Portage County. And as we saw a map of the location on one of the local TV newscasts, we wondered - "hey, isn't that right next to a certain local radio station's transmitter site?". Sure enough, it is...the primary - and only - transmitter site for Media-Com talk WNIR/100.1, the Kent-licensed station better known as "The Talk of Akron".A … [Read more...]

Akron/Canton News Returns – Sort Of – And People Meters

We're actually surprised this didn't happen earlier this year, when the WKYC/3-produced "Akron/Canton News" ended its run on Time Warner Cable's "NEON" local programming channel....after a previous run over-air on ION-owned WVPX/23.WKYC Akron bureau chief Eric Mansfield has started what we guess could be called "Akron/Canton News 2.0" via a new video player on his WKYC "Have I Got News For You!" blog. The video player aggregates all of Mansfield's (and WKYC's) recent Akron/Canton-based stories … [Read more...]

It’s That Time Of Year

Back in the day, when dinosaurs roamed the earth and cable TV was in its infancy, you had just a handful of places to find a televised high school football game in Northeast Ohio. The primary carrier of high school football was local PBS affiliate WVIZ/25, which featured its "Game of the Week" on tape delay late Friday nights.Various other outlets, like cable access channels, carried some assorted games. But that was about it.Now, televised high school football has popped up all over - with a … [Read more...]
