And we start the month with a long list of topics, some that have been sitting here a while, and others brand new... MATT'S LANDING: Like, for example, the word of the Houston landing place of Northeast Ohio-born-and-bred talker Matt Patrick. The former Clear Channel Akron market hot AC WKDD/98.1 and talk WHLO/640 host, who holds the 1-4 PM Saturday slot at Clear Channel talk WTAM/1100 Cleveland, is making a big splash at a huge Clear Channel station in Houston. Starting Tuesday, July 5th, … [Read more...]
Some Big Updates
We have some big updates from the fringes of the OMW coverage area, but let's start in Cleveland first... THE MOSSMAN AND REBECCA SHOW?: We didn't see it, so we don't know what Local TV Fox affiliate WJW/8 "Fox 8" is calling the temporary replacement for "The Robin Swoboda Show", taking the 10 AM weekday time slot after the sudden departure of that show's namesake host on Friday. But we're told that indeed, Fox 8 entertainment reporter David "Mossman" Moss was in the former "RS" studio … [Read more...]
Digging Out
UPDATE 12/14/10 1:11 PM: We've added a new second item...scroll down... ---------- Pardon us while we put the shovel aside. After all, we've been dealing with yet another Northeast Ohio snowstorm... FROM TWO TO NONE: The older-skewing Youngstown market has long had two standards outlets - Clear Channel's WNIO/1390 Youngstown, and Cumulus' WSOM/600 Salem. It is about to have zero standards outlets, as WSOM has ditched the standards music for talk as "NewsTalk 600". "NewsTalk 600" features a … [Read more...]
Two Quick Hits
Some stuff we forgot earlier, or want to spend a little time with now... ESPN/TWC: One effect of the recent deal between the ESPN networks and Time Warner Cable has taken hold. Starting Monday, Time Warner subscribers gained access ESPN and ESPN3.com oniine from any Internet connection. We've tried it from a tethered cell phone, and though we wouldn't recommend it due to bandwidth issues, it did work - give a take a pause or ten, and some pixellation. You don't need to be a Time Warner Cable … [Read more...]
Doc Thompson (kinda) returns to Ohio
Remember Doc Thompson? He's the former production director for Clear Channel oldies/classic hits WMJI/105.7, and also was a producer and sidekick for the station's longtime top-rated "Lanigan and Malone" morning show. (Listeners to talk WTVN/610 Columbus may even remember the Saturday night talk show he co-hosted with fellow WMJI staffer Bryan Radabaugh back at the turn of the century.) Doc left WMJI in 2005 for a programming gig at short-lived Albuquerque NM startup FM talker KAGM, and later … [Read more...]
New Starts, Part Two
A week ending update of some new starts...some temporary, some permanent... FILL-INS: Scripps ABC affiliate WEWS/5 has gone to some experienced freelance sports help while it awaits the legal resolution of the case of weekend sports anchor Terry Brooks. The station is turning to former WKYC/3 weekend sports anchor Mike Cairns to fill-in on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Since leaving WKYC, Cairns has physically gone - well, not far at all - as he's been freelancing on various shows for SportsTime … [Read more...]
The Big Flood
UPDATED 8/10/10 10:45 PM: Oops! There's one more item we forgot to mention, which you can read by scrolling down to the bottom if you read this when it came out... --------- We don't know why we bother to go on hiatus, no matter how busy life beyond the Mighty Blog of Fun(tm) may be. Items tend to write themselves, anyway, and basically demand to be put up...and there's another flood we have to deal with... WCLV MOVE: Classical mainstay WCLV in Cleveland has already made one big move in the … [Read more...]
Overloaded Friday
Sometimes news piles up on Friday as things get "buried" heading into the weekend. This time around, it just happened. And a fundraising idea for your Mighty Blog of Fun(tm)? Selling scorecards for the Columbus radio dial... REWIND, NOT TALK: Lance Venta and his NetGnomes at RadioInsight pointed out a domain name registration for Saga's Columbus cluster, the registration for names that we passed along earlier this month. Quoting the item again: Saga Communications appears poised to flip one … [Read more...]
