Cincinnati Way

Our primary focus here at OMW is Northeast Ohio, covering the radio and TV stations (and other media) of the Cleveland, Akron, Canton and Youngstown areas. We'll occasionally run items from other parts of Ohio, as far afield as Toledo, Lima and Cincinnati, but we don't really have all that many sources in other parts of the state. That's one reason we wholeheartedly welcome a new media blog that focuses on Cincinnati, Southwest Ohio and nearby areas.Check it out at Tri-State Media … [Read more...]

A Service To Our XM Subscribers

Other than one small part, this isn't connected to Ohio radio. But we figured if the folks at Sirius XM won't do it, we'd give our readers who subscribe to XM Satellite Radio the heads up...the service's music lineup changes, drastically, tomorrow. We won't get into the details, but we found a new leaked (PDF format) lineup here, and a leaked (PDF format) FAQ about the XM lineup changes here. The links are from an unofficial fan site run by XM users, where users are discussing the changes here. The … [Read more...]

Not Really Angry About It

Budget cuts have done it again in Cincinnati - split radio's "Angry Guys".Cincinnati Enquirer radio/TV guru John Kiesewetter reports that one half of the morning drive duo, Richard Skinner, has been cut loose by Cumulus rock WFTK/96.5 "96 Rock" due to budget concerns. His partner in morning radio anger, Tom Gamble, remains - with someone who doesn't sound like an angry male, sidekick "Sister Karen".Though Kiese reports that Skinner had just agreed to a new deal in October, and was working out … [Read more...]

End Of A Busy Week

Just some items we didn't want to leave around for the weekend...CINCINNATI SHUFFLE: In mid-October, long time Friend of OMW Scott Fybush stumbled onto something in his role as editor of the radio industry directory web site 100000watts.com.Scott told us that he saw a filing for a call letter swap in Cincinnati...with the WSWD call letters moving from 94.9 FM to 97.3 FM, and the WYGY call letters moving to replace them at 94.9.We didn't think much of it, as there was no other information to … [Read more...]

OMW’s First Digital TV Q&A

We went back to read our item about the early analog switchoff of Youngstown market PBS affiliate WNEO/45 Alliance, and...well, we figured some of our readers may have some questions about the digital TV transition.Late on the night of February 17, 2009, just before the clock strikes midnight into the 18th, TV transmitter facilities around America will be very busy places...as every full-power TV station in the nation shuts off its analog transmitter for good. (For the record, as far as we … [Read more...]

Baby, If You’ve Ever Wondered

An iconic Cincinnati radio station celebrates its 30th anniversary today. It's a radio station that never actually existed on the dial, as you might be able to tell from our quote from its opening theme song in the title of this entry.Television's "WKRP in Cincinnati" provided a surprisingly accurate, and hilarious, look at the radio industry in its run on CBS in the late 1970's and early 1980's. It also gave Ohio's Queen City a national "home" on the tube, and spawned a brief syndicated-only … [Read more...]

Radio One Cuts Hit Ohio, Other Markets

The down economy, and the media's troubles, are just part of the story at Radio One - which reportedly made a wide variety of job cuts in a number of markets Thursday, including at all of its Ohio clusters. We don't have any details directly about the company's Cleveland stations, but Radio-Info.com columnist Tom Taylor includes this line in his story about the Radio One job cuts:In Cleveland, production talent, parttime air talent and producers gone and some fulltime vacancies not filled, for a … [Read more...]

Some More Things

Some stuff we left behind in our "Two-Fer Tuesday" update, and mostly minor notes...THE NATION'S STATION: Clear Channel has programming rights to a handful of channels on XM Satellite Radio, which was recently merged into competitor Sirius under the corporate name "Sirius XM Radio".Trade site AllAccess reports that Clear Channel is making a number of changes on its XM space, including the change of the "Sunny" AC format channel to "The Pink Channel", as described by a recent AllAccess item: … [Read more...]

We’re Back

And this time, it wasn't just our hectic behind-the-scenes life that kept us away.Every so often, the Blogger computers automatically scan the service's blogs to make sure that automatically-posted unsolicited marketing blogs (think "canned luncheon meat by Hormel") aren't clogging up the system.Late Friday, we were told that we were "flagged" by this process, which was clearly an error. (A human-posted news-oriented blog that's been around for over three years?) That "flag" - while keeping … [Read more...]
