The Lanigan Farewell Tour

As you'd expect a week before an iconic radio personality speaks his last daily words into a microphone, there's a growing amount of attention being paid to retiring Clear Channel classic hits WMJI/105.7 "Majic 105.7" morning star John Lanigan. The first feature on the radio vet, who started in Cleveland in 1970 on the old WGAR/1220 (replacing now national radio icon Don Imus), was aired in an odd place. It's no secret that Lanigan has had his, uh, moments with Raycom Media's CBS affiliate … [Read more...]

Ohio’s LPFM Application Invasion

OK, so it's not an invasion yet, as many of the nearly 2,800 LPFM applications that recently landed at the FCC won't breathe a bit of (electronic) air. Thanks to our new content partnership with NorthEast Radio Watch and RadioInsight, with heavy data lifting by Lance Venta, Scott Fybush, and long-time friend Garrett Wollman at The Archives @ BostonRadio.org, we have a list of 56 applicants for new LPFM stations in Ohio. We'll break out the applicants in the OMW Coverage Area (basically, … [Read more...]

WPFX Finally Gets “Luckey”

A few days ago, we updated you on the future of BAS-operated, Tiffin Broadcasting-owned and Heidelberg University-bound WTTF/1600 Tiffin. Former sister station WPFX/107.7 North Baltimore, on the other hand, has had a long and complicated adventure in their return to the air. But at long last, the station has arrived at finish line in the suburb of Luckey, Ohio, returning to the air this past Friday as a country station, "107.7 The Wolf." Whether or not this is a stunt remains to be seen. A … [Read more...]

Tons of Assorted News

'A veritable potpourri' of interesting news items gathered throughout the weekend: FSO AND DAN PATRICK: Dayton native Dan Patrick's satellite TV simulcast of his late-morning sports radio show will soon be available to non-satellite subscribers. Doc Thompson (kinda) returns to Ohio

Remember Doc Thompson? He's the former production director for Clear Channel oldies/classic hits WMJI/105.7, and also was a producer and sidekick for the station's longtime top-rated "Lanigan and Malone" morning show. (Listeners to talk WTVN/610 Columbus may even remember the Saturday night talk show he co-hosted with fellow WMJI staffer Bryan Radabaugh back at the turn of the century.) Doc left WMJI in 2005 for a programming gig at short-lived Albuquerque NM startup FM talker KAGM, and later … [Read more...]

One Going Early

Back to the now-very-confusing world of digital TV...where one station serving Ohio viewers is going to shut off its analog signal a bit early.Like, tonight. All but a handful of Ohio stations have backed away from what would now be an "early" analog TV shutoff on the original deadline, February 17, 2009. For those with no calendars handy, that day is otherwise known as "tomorrow".As a result, as best as we can determine, the following stations will still adhere to the original deadline, and … [Read more...]

More Digital TV Date Fallout

We promise...we've got some other items in the hopper, which will show up later today. But the about-to-be-changed national digital TV transition date still dominates the headlines, and we're still tracking fallout from it locally and regionally. The date change bill is expected to be signed by President Obama sometime in the next day or two, then the FCC will be tasked with quickly writing rules to put it into place.Though Local TV-owned WJW/8 "FOX 8" in Cleveland is still the only TV station … [Read more...]

Digital TV Date Etched In Water

It's been kicking around Washington for the past few weeks, but it looks like Congress may indeed try to stand in front of the speeding Digital TV Express Train, wave its arms wildly and shout into the train's loud whistle - "slow down!"A number of reports late last week indicate that a key Republican U.S. Senator, Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas (ranking member of the Senate's Commerce Committee), has ended her opposition to a move of the digital TV transition date from February 17th to June … [Read more...]
