Weekend Quick Items

Two quick items, the first written by our own Secondary Editorial Voice, the second, your Primary... MICHAEL STANLEY ON LEAVE: This is probably the very last thing CBS classic rock WNCX/98.5 wanted to deal with right now. In the wake of canceling (and Soviet-style purging) "The Maxwell Show" earlier in the morning, PD/midday host Bill Louis posted on WNCX's website a bombshell regarding longtime afternoon drive icon Michael Stanley. You might have noticed something is up in the afternoons. … [Read more...]

Little Doubt: Maxwell Out

It appears that CBS Radio Cleveland classic rocker WNCX/98.5 is moving on without "The Maxwell Show". Program director Bill Louis is on the station this morning, playing the station's usual classic rock music, with not a hint of any mention of "The Maxwell Show", the talk show which has occupied the WNCX morning drive airwaves. And the exclamation point on Maxwell's exit comes when you go to the WNCX website, which has been scrubbed of all mentions of the show, not to mention "The Maxwell … [Read more...]

The Fan, One Week Out

With the debut of CBS Radio sports station "92.3 The Fan" on WKRK/92.3 less than one week away, we have to update some stuff...including some loose ends regarding the outgoing "Radio 92.3" alt-rock format... LINEUP (NEARLY) SET: The station's weekday host lineup is nearly set, with a couple of things still out there. * We already knew that former Fox Sports Radio duo "Kiley and Booms" (Kevin Kiley paired with Euclid's own Chuck Booms) were set to anchor morning drive. We hear that a familiar … [Read more...]

Some Other Stuff

We're just a week away from the debut of a new station that's held much of our attention lately...CBS Radio's incoming Cleveland sports talk outlet, the transformation of alt-rock WKRK/92.3 "Radio 92.3" to "92.3 The Fan" next Monday. We'll have plenty more to update about that story later today. But for now, some other stuff... JIM'S COMING BACK: With health problems sidelining him from calling Cleveland Browns preseason games on Gannett NBC affiliate WKYC/3, a lot of viewers are … [Read more...]

Quick Hits, Mid-August Edition

Getting a Round Tuit(tm) on a mid-summer's day.. FSR TO 92.3: OMW has confirmed that Fox Sports Radio will be used to fill the overnight hours on incoming CBS Radio sports talker WKRK/92.3 "The Fan", when that station launches a week from Monday. We also hear that a lineup for "92.3 The Fan" is nearly complete, and that the station's local evening programming will last until midnight. (It had been expected to run until 10 PM.) The use of FSR on 92.3 will likely mean the network's end on its … [Read more...]

Talk To Me, WABQ

It took a few days later than expected, but Gary Richards’ LMA of Radio Advantage One’s WABQ/1460 Painesville took effect on Thursday, August 4, with the station shedding its’ gospel music format in favor of liberal talk. As of right now, a website for "Talk 1460" is up but still in development. No streaming of the station yet, either, but given Gary R.'s past lease of Bernard Radio's WVKO/1580 Columbus, it should be coming soon. The lineup is pretty much what was outlined in the Scene article … [Read more...]

The Fan Aftermath

You know how it goes around here...a big media news bombshell drops, and we kick it around the next day. (We'll get to some other stuff a little later today or over the weekend.) As expected, CBS Radio made Cleveland its 15th sports radio market, with the announcement that "Sports Radio 92.3 The Fan" will debut on WKRK/92.3 (what is now alt-rock "Radio 92.3") on August 29th. The station has only announced two shows so far, the shows that were already rumored - "Kiley and Booms" (Kevin Kiley … [Read more...]

What’s The Frequency, Kenneth?

With apologies to former "CBS Evening News" anchor Dan Rather... We've covered the upcoming launch of the new CBS Radio FM sports talker in Cleveland, which some believe could launch as soon as Monday, like the proverbial blanket. You might have noticed that most of our mentions of the new station say something like this - "92.3-or-wherever it lands". We do that for a reason. As of this writing, Sunday afternoon, we have no confirmation of which frequency CBS Radio will use as the home of … [Read more...]

All That’s Not FM Sports

We've been spending quite a bit of time - and getting a lot of information - about CBS Radio's pending flip to an FM sports talk format in Cleveland. There are plenty of other items floating out there, so let's grab them... CURTIS HEADS SOUTH: Scripps ABC affiliate WEWS/5 in Cleveland recently dispatched "Good Morning Cleveland" anchors Pete Kenworthy and Kimberly Gill off the show, as we've reported already. (Kenworthy returned to the station recently, in a short-term deal to do field … [Read more...]

All But Inevitable

We have a separate item with a bunch of other news coming soon, but first, the athletic elephant in the room. There are skeptics, to be sure, that CBS Radio will launch an FM sports talk station soon in Cleveland, probably on the current WKRK/92.3 (now mostly unstaffed alt-rock "Radio 92.3"). There are also people who doubt man really landed on the moon in 1969. OK, so we are not ready to confirm on our own that "92.3 The Fan" - or whatever CBS ends up calling it - could launch as soon as … [Read more...]
