Changes And Other Stuff

It's a changing world, but even more so in local media... THE CURIOUS CASE OF WINW...ER...WCER: When last we visited the world of Curtis A. Perry III, operator of gospel daytimer WINW/1520 Canton, he was basically drowning in water - radio wise. The station, which he claims to own through a time brokerage-to-purchase agreement (despite license transfer paperwork not being filed with the FCC), has been off the air since earlier this year. The FCC deleted WINW's license, saying the station … [Read more...]

That WKNR Announcement

As we expected and hinted about on Twitter on Tuesday, Good Karma sports WKNR/850 Cleveland "ESPN 850"'s "major programming announcement" is not about changes to the station's highest profile shows or their hours, or a new signal. The station is launching a new daily official Cleveland Browns show, "Cleveland Browns Daily", weekdays 6-7 PM year-round. The show's host, veteran NFL journalist Vic Carucci, will be a Cleveland Browns team employee. It appears from the announcement that the team … [Read more...]

The Friday Mix

UPDATE 6/26/11 1:30 AM: In sorting through the various awards recently handed out for Kent State University public radio outlet WKSU/89.7-and-its-simulcasters, we missed this individual award from the Ohio Professional Writers, Inc. (OPW), the state affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW). And we feel bad about missing it, as it mentions "one of our own", the woman who is the conduit of all information about WKSU, who happens to have a more important title than just the one … [Read more...]

Two Bombshells

There have been two major pieces of news from the world of Northeast Ohio media in the past day. And as big as the news from Cleveland radio was, news from the television side was even more amazing... MEDICAL LEAVE: For nearly 11 years, WKYC/3 sports director Jim Donovan has had a secret few people outside 13th and Lakeside knew about...but now, everyone knows. Donovan has been quietly battling leukemia. And "everyone knows" now because at the end of his sports segment on Wednesday's 11 PM … [Read more...]

Clearing Out The Week

Some of this will seem familiar to you, if you follow our Twitter account. Some, won't, but the Twitter feed often turns into a place we can "take notes" on future topics. There will be no word on some persistent rumors, discussion of which will be found on our social media presence. Let's just say we're not a "Fan" of the chances of a certain rumor involving a major Cleveland FM station coming true any time soon... FOX 8 SPORTS: The sports department at Local TV Fox affiliate WJW/8 is … [Read more...]

Rudy Pie Passes Away

When noting the passing of notable media figures, we occasionally point out that the person is pretty much synonymous with their field. That's certainly the case for long-time Akron high school sports radio broadcaster Rudy Piekarski, who died of natural causes Tuesday at the age of 69. Rubber City Radio's AkronNewsNow.com has more here, and the Beacon Journal's Ohio.com has more here. Over his decades on the air, "Rudy Pie" called thousands of games on a number of radio stations...starting … [Read more...]

Want To Replace Joe Tait?

The Cleveland Cavaliers have thrown open the door for play-by-play announcers who think they can follow in Joe Tait's footsteps. With the ending of Joe's 39 year run as "Voice of the Cavaliers", the team has officially announced that it's accepting applications to replace the veteran announcer. (Well, maybe you can't really ever "replace" Joe Tait, but someone's gotta call the games whenever the NBA starts up its next season.) There's more, in this article by the Lake County News-Herald's Bob … [Read more...]

TRANSCRIPT: Joe Tait’s Last Cavs Radio Words

The following is a transcript of Joe Tait's last moments as the Voice of the Cavaliers...first, his final exchange with Mike Snyder, and then, his sign off - slightly altered from his usual version. We'd like to thank Fox Sports Ohio for replaying the Cavaliers Radio Network call, so we could properly transcribe these segments: ---------- MIKE SNYDER: Joe, we've reached that time, and I'll tell ya, I must say, it's really been a privilege for me to work with you, doing this over the last 20 … [Read more...]

Have A Good Night Everybody

A big "thank you" to our Secondary Editorial Voice(tm), for handling things in what ended up being over a one month long hiatus. We'll have a much larger item with other news nuggets a little later today, but this one's for Joe Tait. We've gotten a small taste of what Cleveland Cavaliers basketball on the radio sounds like without Tait, but unfortunately, that'll become a permanent meal after tonight. Yes, Joe Tait...who has been the NBA team's radio voice almost continuously since a few … [Read more...]

Assorted Monday News Nuggets

LAFORCE IS WITH FOX 8: It looks like Local TV Fox affiliate WJW/8 has brought aboard a new sports reporter after former weeknight sports anchor Tony Rizzo's departure last December. VermilionOhioNews.com posted on their March 28 issue that Vermilion native Allie LaForce has been hired by WJW as a sports reporter. A recent broadcast journalism graduate of Ohio University (where she also played on the Bobcats' girls basketball team), LaForce was the Miss Teen for 2005 and also made a guest … [Read more...]
