Quick Hits, Mid-August Edition

Getting a Round Tuit(tm) on a mid-summer's day.. FSR TO 92.3: OMW has confirmed that Fox Sports Radio will be used to fill the overnight hours on incoming CBS Radio sports talker WKRK/92.3 "The Fan", when that station launches a week from Monday. We also hear that a lineup for "92.3 The Fan" is nearly complete, and that the station's local evening programming will last until midnight. (It had been expected to run until 10 PM.) The use of FSR on 92.3 will likely mean the network's end on its … [Read more...]

Talk To Me, WABQ

It took a few days later than expected, but Gary Richards’ LMA of Radio Advantage One’s WABQ/1460 Painesville took effect on Thursday, August 4, with the station shedding its’ gospel music format in favor of liberal talk. As of right now, a website for "Talk 1460" is up but still in development. No streaming of the station yet, either, but given Gary R.'s past lease of Bernard Radio's WVKO/1580 Columbus, it should be coming soon. The lineup is pretty much what was outlined in the Scene article … [Read more...]

The Friday Mix

UPDATE 6/26/11 1:30 AM: In sorting through the various awards recently handed out for Kent State University public radio outlet WKSU/89.7-and-its-simulcasters, we missed this individual award from the Ohio Professional Writers, Inc. (OPW), the state affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW). And we feel bad about missing it, as it mentions "one of our own", the woman who is the conduit of all information about WKSU, who happens to have a more important title than just the one … [Read more...]

That Long Delayed Update

As regular readers know, Life Often Intervenes when it comes to the ability to update this blog. We're often able to put up brief updates on Twitter and Facebook, but not able to set aside the time for a full blog post. We have the time, so here we are... FREE BEER AND HOT WINGS: A Youngstown station is offering Free Beer and Hot Wings. No, don't start lining up at Cumulus classic rock WYFM/102.9 "Y103" hoping for no-cost booze and snacks. "Free Beer and Hot Wings" is the name of a morning … [Read more...]

Our Next Pile Of Items

Now that Joe Tait has said "have a good life, everybody!" and retired to his southern Medina County farm, let's get to the other items piling up in the OMW Topics List... ...SOON ON FM?: You may be hearing Clear Channel talk WTAM/1100 in Cleveland branding itself as "NewsRadio 1100, now on 99.1 FM", and soon. That's because it appears Cleveland is about to become the latest Clear Channel market where a powerhouse AM talk station takes up residence at an additional spot on the FM dial, and a … [Read more...]

Afternoon Drive Changes at WARF

Clear Channel sports WARF/1350 Akron is making a change to their ten-month old afternoon drive show. The station announced back on Friday that "The Drive" will now be hosted by Ken Carman and Todd "Fishhead" Fisher, which Carman confirmed on his Twitter account. The 3:00 p.m to 6:00 p.m time slot remains unchanged. Now-former host Jon Marchoino will return to his original home of Hot AC WKDD/98.1, to host afternoon drive live again. Jon had bounced back and forth between WKDD and WARF much of … [Read more...]

Doc Thompson (kinda) returns to Ohio

Remember Doc Thompson? He's the former production director for Clear Channel oldies/classic hits WMJI/105.7, and also was a producer and sidekick for the station's longtime top-rated "Lanigan and Malone" morning show. (Listeners to talk WTVN/610 Columbus may even remember the Saturday night talk show he co-hosted with fellow WMJI staffer Bryan Radabaugh back at the turn of the century.) Doc left WMJI in 2005 for a programming gig at short-lived Albuquerque NM startup FM talker KAGM, and later … [Read more...]

News, Scattered and Sown

There have been so many stories that have popped up over the past week (notwithstanding the flap between Matt Patrick and the entire Michigan State Spartans fanbase for his remarks on coach Mike D'Antonio back on Monday... so much has been said that this list of articles across the country should suffice). As OMW's Primary Editorial Voice (tm) noted late last week, a guest editor would likely be brought aboard to help out as a Secondary Editorial Voice (tm). As such, this will be my first … [Read more...]

Quick Hits

Some items we have to get online, quickly...but as it turns out, this is a full-sized update... PREMIERES IN THE BOOKS...: We missed an update on Wednesday, so we didn't get to remind you of the very first Regina Brett Show on WKSU/89.7-and-its-million-simulcasters. (OK, so it only seems like WKSU has a million full power repeaters and simulcasters.) For the record, show #1 on Wednesday night at 7 PM, courtesy of a press release that came in more than enough time from WKSU's OMW Handler, Ann … [Read more...]

New Starts, Part Two

A week ending update of some new starts...some temporary, some permanent... FILL-INS: Scripps ABC affiliate WEWS/5 has gone to some experienced freelance sports help while it awaits the legal resolution of the case of weekend sports anchor Terry Brooks. The station is turning to former WKYC/3 weekend sports anchor Mike Cairns to fill-in on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Since leaving WKYC, Cairns has physically gone - well, not far at all - as he's been freelancing on various shows for SportsTime … [Read more...]
