Two WEWS Items

While looking for a story on the naming of UPN affiliate WNGT-LP/48 as Toledo’s MyNetworkTV affiliate, we stumbled onto something else, which lead us to stumble onto something else. Now, as we get up off the floor, here’s your official OMW Stumbling Update:

HARVEY LEAVING 5: WEWS/5 reporter Brad Harvey is apparently leaving the Cleveland ABC affiliate, according to Toledo Blade media columnist Russ Lemmon.

Lemmon says Harvey’s heading to the Glass City as a co-anchor of CBS affiliate WTOL/11’s morning newscasts. He’s said to be starting in Toledo in mid-September.

Lemmon describes Harvey as WEWS’ political reporter, though we remember him more for his reports from the station’s Akron bureau – located at the Akron Beacon Journal…

HD NEWS: While searching for Harvey’s bio information, we stumbled (ooof!) onto the official announcement of Steve Hyvonen as Channel 5’s new news director.

We already knew and reported that, of course, but we noticed this line in the press release announcing his new job:

Hyvonen will also play a critical role as NewsChannel5 prepares advances in multi-platform technologies. In addition to select ABC programs already broadcasting in high-definition, NewsChannel5 is preparing for the debut of its newscasts in HD later this year.

It’s the first word we’ve had that WEWS would become the third local news operation to broadcast in HDTV. WJW/8 started it last year, and WKYC/3 recently upgraded its studio to broadcast news in HD. We’ve also heard that all three stations may be scoping out HD-equipped helicopters.

We’re not holding our breath that Reserve Square will make it four-for-four, though. “19 Action News” barely manages to broadcast in color…
