We had an item ready to post on Tuesday, but THIS JUST IN, as the saying goes...it's time to scrap the Digital Front Page. The other items are still here, and will follow... ROBIN LEAVING: There's been a lot of talk over the past few years in Cleveland about Robin Swoboda's career moves, exits and returns. Looks like she's exiting again. Gannett NBC affiliate WKYC/3 has announced that Swoboda, co-anchor of the station's 7 PM newscast with sports director/anchor Jim Donovan, is heading … [Read more...]
Del Donahoo Passes
Viewers of Gannett NBC affiliate WKYC/3 in Cleveland knew him, for generations, for "Del's Folks" - his series of personal stories of many Northeast Ohioans. Del Donahoo passed away last night at the age of 90. Like many other even older media personalities, Del had a Facebook account...presumably updated by the same person who posted this on Wednesday: It's with great sadness that we report Del Donahoo passed away yesterday evening, February 4, 2014. He was a television icon here in … [Read more...]
Short Month, Long News
The year's shortest month starts out with a pretty decent list of news items... many from the past few days... SHOES TO FILL: Long-time Clear Channel Cleveland programmer Bo Matthews left behind some big shoes to fill when he departed the PD chair at rock/talk WMMS/100.7, top 40 WAKS/96.5 "Kiss FM" and station-in-a-closet alt-rock WMMS-HD2-W256BT/99.1 "99X". With Matthews now the cluster programming VP for Clear Channel's Cincinnati cluster, Oak Tree has found his replacement. He's Chris … [Read more...]
Controversy On Tap
Our first two items are definitely of a controversial nature... and the first one has spread like wildfire all over Northeast Ohio media... SALES BOMBSHELL: We don't normally spend a lot of time with off-air items in local TV and radio, but this one is too...interesting. When we first heard that a lawsuit had been filed claiming salacious working conditions in a local TV station's sales department, we joked, "oh, it's probably at Reserve Square"...the home of Raycom Media duo CBS affiliate … [Read more...]
OMW Is Powered By…
We may have mentioned once or twice that in addition to Life Intervening(tm), there have been other obstacles to updating this report on a regular basis. Namely, what has been the Official OMW Computer, an aging Windows XP box that we're pretty sure is powered by steam and held together by bailing wire, string and gum. On occasion, its screen would turn blue and it would stop working. Not anymore. Thanks to a long-time OMW reader, we're outfitted with a decent laptop of much more recent … [Read more...]
Unloading Before The Holidays
This doesn't necessarily mean that we're going on The H Word through the end of 2013. But, a lot of items have piled up, so here we go! MORE 5 CHANGES: In TV news, the phrase "nothing is more constant than change" is certainly true. But at 3001 Euclid, the folks at Scripps ABC affiliate WEWS/5's "NewsChannel 5" could adopt the phrase as a motto. The station's low-rated "Good Morning Cleveland" has undergone a host of changes since this blog debuted in 2005. Now, the "NewsChannel … [Read more...]
Press Release Theatre (Vol. 11), The November Edition
Some stuff from our inbox, to tide you over until the next update. And as is tradition with Press Release Theatre, long-time (say it with us!) personal and professional Friend of OMW Ann VerWiebe from Kent State University public outlet WKSU/89.7-and-its-many-simulcasters opens things up for us. (She honestly pays no extra for the placement...) ----- VIVIAN GOODMAN REPORTS ON THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA FROM COLOGNE, LINZ AND VIENNA From Nov. 18 through 22, WKSU Reporter/Producer … [Read more...]
More Than Just A Twitter Recap
We're catching up again. But a sudden, unexpected amount of free time means this is much more than a recap of what we've posted on social media. It's really an old style OMW blog post... DARREN TOMS EXITS OAK TREE: Clear Channel talk WTAM/1100 Cleveland news director Darren Toms is heading out of the building for a non-radio job. He'll be the first Director of Community Outreach for the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court. Darren's last day at Oak Tree will be October 28th. The opening caused … [Read more...]
