Jobs And Other Stuff

As promised, some job openings and some other stuff. And...not a single April Fools Day-inspired post in the bunch... JOB OPENING #1: A staffer at Radio One Cleveland has nabbed a new job, and that means the cluster is looking for a new assistant chief engineer. Chief engineer Gary Zocolo, who is a long-time Friend of OMW and then some, lets us know: Ben Slagle was hired here as Assistant Chief Engineer two years ago. Ben had IT skills but very limited broadcast knowledge. After two very … [Read more...]

Piled This High

It's a wide assortment of news items this time, that apparently didn't melt like those piles of snow we had... JAMIE'S IN DC: Now-former Raycom CBS-MyNet combo WOIO/19-WUAB/43 "19 Action News" (stay tuned!) morning traffic reporter Jamie Sullivan disappeared so quickly and quietly late last year, she was almost on milk cartons. And despite the best efforts of This Space and others, no one would share a peep about What Happened To Jamie. We now know. A week ago, Jamie Sullivan landed as a … [Read more...]

On The Street

And we'll start with a, uh, "handful of layoffs" at a local TV station... SCRIPPS HAMMER: Word spread among various markets that Scripps was letting a few people go (to the parking lot, then home for good). We have been told that the layoff count is a pretty big "handful" (more on that phrase later) at Scripps ABC affiliate WEWS/5 here in Cleveland...the last number we heard was that seven people are no longer "on your side" at NewsChannel 5. We don't have any names at this point, but we're … [Read more...]

The Monday Aftershock

As if our earlier item - with a whole laundry list of changes at local TV newsrooms - wasn't enough... SAM'S REPLACEMENT: With well-liked Scripps ABC affiliate WEWS/5 VP/general manager Sam Rosenwasser no longer in the building at 3001 Euclid, we now know who'll replace him. We'll turn to the company's official press release: Steve Weinstein, an award-winning journalist and forward-looking leader, has been named vice president and general manager of WEWS in Cleveland, effective Jan. 12. His … [Read more...]

All In The Family

No, not the iconic 1970's sitcom with Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton, which airs weeknights on Antenna TV (Tribune's WJW/8.2 locally)... FIRST FAMILY OF LOCAL TV: A shuffling at Gannett NBC affiliate WKYC/3 brings top management of the station officially into the same family. WKYC's long-time top advertising and promotions executive has been promoted, according to our friend and blogging colleague Frank Macek at his "WKYC Director's Cut" blog: “I am pleased to announce the … [Read more...]

Posting To The Holidays

This will be the last regular news post of 2012, barring any major (and we mean major) Northeast Ohio media news. We'll continue to put breaking media bulletins and other observations on the OMW Social Media Presence(tm) (uh, our Twitter and Facebook accounts). May all of our readers have a very happy holiday season, and we'll see you in January...but, until then... AL BARTHOLET'S REPLACEMENT: Kent State University public radio outlet WKSU/89.7-and-its-many-simulcasters has found its … [Read more...]

Job Board, June Edition

Long time OMW readers know that we eagerly accept employment related posts...both from job seekers, and those with actual employment opportunities..and post them free of charge. Here's a good one for the right, up and coming radio engineer. Radio One's Cleveland cluster is looking for an assistant chief engineer. The cluster's chief engineer, Gary Zocolo, tells us: I have a great position for an aspiring engineer who has the fundamental knowledge accumulated. It would probably be one of the … [Read more...]

The Elephant In The Radio Room

Long-time readers may have noticed that we've had almost nothing on one of the biggest changes about to hit Cleveland radio...changes at AAA/adult rock WNWV/107.3 "V107.3", the Elyria-licensed station that is being sold by Elyria-Lorain Broadcasting to Akron's Rubber City Radio Group, owners of oldies/news WAKR/1590, rock WONE/97.5 and country WQMX/94.9. The application to sell the station was approved by the FCC on November 28th, and closing - and a temporary move of the station to RCRG's … [Read more...]

The Friday Mix

UPDATE 6/26/11 1:30 AM: In sorting through the various awards recently handed out for Kent State University public radio outlet WKSU/89.7-and-its-simulcasters, we missed this individual award from the Ohio Professional Writers, Inc. (OPW), the state affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW). And we feel bad about missing it, as it mentions "one of our own", the woman who is the conduit of all information about WKSU, who happens to have a more important title than just the one … [Read more...]
